Personal Projects
My personal work is influenced by contemporary visual food culture, and particularly by mainstream editorial food photography in cookbooks and online.
Current research themes include authenticity and myth in food photography, idealisation of the domestic arena, and aspirational imagery. Food photographs in popular culture conjure shared fantasies of domestic and social life which we engage with, perpetuating a cycle in which 'image/myth' becomes 'image/reality'.
Previous projects have explored food as central to identity, considering how people and food are depicted in popular media. Themes include food as an evolving representation of projected ideological identity, and food choice, as informed by our time/space coordinates and cultural identity.
